The effects of a 15-minute session training daily (2 patients) were compared with those of a 30-minute session training (2 patients) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The result of training was assessed by 5 parameters: maximal inspiratory pressure (Plmax), loading weight of sustainable inspiratory pressure (SIP), 6-minute walking distance, bronchitis emphysema symptom checklist (BESC) and psychosocial adjustment to illness scale (PAIS). Five parameters and vital signs were tested before training and after 6 weeks of training. Plmax and loading weight of SIP were also repeatedly measured per week for 6 weeks, and 6 weeks after completion of this study. All subjects were instructed at the first session and then trained themselves afterward during a given time every day, 6 days per week, for 6 weeks using a resistive inspiratory muscle training device. In both groups, Plmax and loading weight of SIP increased after 6 weeks of training. The six-minute walking distance increased more in the 15-minute IMT group than in the 30-minute IMT group. Some of categories of BESC and PAIS improved in the 15-minute IMT group, whereas in the 30-minute IMT group, 5 of 10 categories in BESC and 4 of 7 categories in PAIS had improved.
A simple domestic training program using resistive inspiratory muscle training device in a 15-minute session daily was more effective in improving exercise performance of some patients with COPD than that in a 30-minute session.
